A Young Hand

Introduced to photography by his mother at age eleven, young Brian won critical acclaim winning a box brownie in a Kodak competition in 19xx. His interest in photography was further nurtured by his science teacher, Mr Taylor during his education at Clontaf Beach High where he founded the photographic club. Kodak were the market leaders and driving force in photography at the time, they were great promoters who supported schools with education material. Kodak continue their involvement with education and training to this day, although perhaps not with the passion the company had during the period leading to a climax in the 1960's, when accessible colour photography was a new frontier. Brian's son, Leon, is currently employed by Kodak and following the well trodden path of his father.

Professional Development

Brian worked for the Redcliffe Herald for a short time before commencing at H B Green, in 1965 at the Spring Hill Studio. Barry Green had inherited the business from this father Harry, one of photography's forefathers in Brisbane. Brian worked for what later became Barry Green Photography for 19 years until embarking on this own professional journey in 1984. Brian was known about town as the lad with the blue MG TF (1965-1980)

Inspiration

Inspired by the works of Dianne Arbus and Sam Haskins, Brian was born into a world of colour and B&W photography, of flexible film stock, a world without the benefit of digital retouching, a time when images had authenticity. When Technicolor motion pictures and Kodachrome transparencies ruled as the superior technologies.

As a child who grew up at Redcliffe he was profoundly influenced by the natural environment and the sea. These themes are clearly evident in Brian's personal work to this day.
